for a long time I’ve been looking at other sources of information about building a home network, and found them sadly lacking either in detail, currency, suitability, and references to more information about why things were done a certain way. I figured one more wouldn’t hurt…

These pages document both how muse.net.nz is set up, and also hopefully how to do it from scratch yourself!

  • email — both IMAP and SMTP, and of course a slick webmail engine
  • web serving using OpenBSD’s built-in Apache 1.3 server
  • blogging to keep track of stuff
  • RCS to give a historical
  • routing using either pfSense, suitable for embedded devices, or a full OpenBSD and pf install
  • file serving over either NFS or OpenAFS for those who need a little bit more flexibility
  • Kerberos using the Heimdal implementation for authentication
  • certificates for TLS and SSL using CaCert for a free alternative to Thawte and Verisign
  • backup using the native dump tools, or bacula for something a little more powerful
  • And of course, along the way, a few other odds & ends about OpenBSD, my preferred OS for back-end stuff.
